William Jay Stone – Obituary

William Jay Stone, 93, of Madison, Alabama passed away September 18, 2017.

He was born September 27, 1923 in the Bronx, New York to Walter and Veronica (Murphy) Stone. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, and son, Lawrence Jay Stone.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Flanagan; children Douglas (Christine) Stone, Barbara (Jim) McGroary, Virginia (Vince) Condello, Laura (Colin) Stone; daughter-in-law, Tina Stone; six granddaughters, Sarah Stone (Knoxville, TN), Kilian (Kyle) Yoder (Seoul, South Korea), Megan (Clark) Davis (Goodlettsville, TN), Kristina McGroary (Cincinnati, OH), Anastasia Claxon (Prescott, AZ), and Stephanie Stone (Oakland, CA); and brother, Noel R. Stone.

Jay retired as a high school guidance counselor in the New Jersey school system and as a Field Artillery Colonel in the National Guard and the Army Reserve. Jay served in the 101st Division (Airborne) during WWII, participating in the Normandy invasion, operation Market Garden and the Battle of Bastogne.

We would like to thank the Flanagan family for their warm, generous, and kind welcome of Jay to their family.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, September 22 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the funeral service to follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Madison County Habitat for Humanity, or Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison. Jay will be missed by his family and all who knew him.
