Funeral Services for Mr. Willard “Rat” McCain, age 91 of Ashland, will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Donald Spradlin and Rev. Harold McCain officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay County Memory Gardens.

Mr. McCain passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Clay County Hospital. He was born and raised in Bluff Springs and attended Gibsonville School. He spent most of his life as a pulpwooder, working and retiring from the clay county road department. Later in life, Rat’s passion was planting his many gardens every summer. He loved being outdoors and “piddlin”. Rat’s favorite place to be was sitting by the fire in his recliner, eating peppermint candies and doing his word search books. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren.

He was survived by his wife of 64 years, Gail McCain of Bluff Springs; three daughters: Lisa Wade (Donald) of Munford, Kim Moore (Glenn) of Ashland, and Ellen Jones (Doug) of Mobile; five grandchildren: Shelton Jones, Will Jones (Amber), Rebekah Saxon (Justin), Scott Wade, and Emily Nash (Jesse); 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Loretta Stewart of Cowpins and Betty Jane Shaddix of Ashland; one brother, Rev. Harold McCain (Glenda) of Ashland, plus several nieces and nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents: William J. and Radar Gortney McCain; and two brothers: Johnny Frank and Dilford McCain.

Active Pallbearers will be Shelton Jones, William Jones, Justin Saxon, Jesse Nash, Jeff Shaddix, and Dale Shaddix. Honorary Pallbearers will be Scott Wade, Donald Wade, Glenn Moore, and Doug Jones.

His visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland from 12:00 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M.
