What’s Happening in the Muscle Shoals Area

THE SHOALS-The Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau has provided a monthly calendar of some of the events going on in the Shoals from now through August.  As more events become available we will have them for you here.

Events and Festivals

April 16 – May 21 Light & Air art exhibition is to be held at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, Tuscumbia. Plein air is the act of painting in the outdoors with a full, open view of your subject, whether it’s a landscape, structure, or still life.   Featured artists: Amy P. Collins, Benny Melton, and Amy R. Peterson. More info: www.tennesseevalleyarts.org

April 22 (Thur) – 7-10pm – Open Mic Night with Crow Holler Band at Coldwater Commons (Pocket Park). Bring your voice or even your favorite instrument! Main Street will be shut down between 5th and 6th Streets and downtown merchants will be open late. (Street will close at 6pm.)

April 24 (Sat) – 10am – Free Morning Walking Tour of downtown Tuscumbia, and it will concentrate on Spring Park—the site of the town’s beginning. Interesting    stories about sports, fairs, transportation, and the earliest pioneer families of Tuscumbia.

April 24 (Sat) – 10am – Free Walking Tours of downtown area of N. Montgomery Ave, Sheffield.  Hear stories about the earliest proprietors of the businesses that made up the commercial district of early Sheffield.

April 24 (Sat) – 12 (noon) – Northwest-Shoals Community College Jazz Concert, City of Muscle Shoals Amphitheater (behind city hall). Bring your own chair for this free event.

April 30 (Fri) – 6-10pm Reels, Wheels & Meals—Free outdoor event presented by Helen Keller Hospital at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, Tuscumbia. Music, food trucks, and the movie Incredibles 2.

April 30 & May 1 – 7pm – John Paul White and the Shoals Symphony in concert at Norton Auditorium, UNA campus, Florence. Tickets and information available:  www.shoalssymphony.org

May 1(Sat) – 10am-4pm Recall LaGrange at LaGrange College Site Park— Free event with vendors, arts & crafts demonstrations, wagon rides to historic cemetery, tours of log cabins, musical entertainment. New display in Museum of recently restored 1840 cotton gin.  Living history event of a Prohibition Era raid of a still at 2pm. Nearby Dawson Distillery will be open for tours 9am -6pm.

May 8 (Sat) – 1-8pm Swamp-a-thon— a virtual fundraiser for the Muscle Shoals Music    Foundation. Patterned after an old-fashioned “telethon.” It will feature performances, a    silent auction, and appearances by local community leaders.  Performances by John Paul White, David Hood, Spooner Oldham, Kevin Holly, and others. Broadcast journalist Greg Screws will emcee the program.

May 15, 16, 22, & 23 – 2pm – The Ritz Theatre opens its 2021 season with an outdoor play, Split in Three, to be held on the Commons in Tuscumbia. More      information/tickets available on their website www.tennesseevalleyarts.org.

May 15 (Sat) – 10am-4pm Touch-a-Truck Scavenger Hunt is a sensory               experience for children and adults to see trucks and equipment and meet the heroes that operate them. Participants visit sponsor locations and complete     activities, collecting points using an app on their phone to win great prizes. For more information: www.jltheshoals.org Mark Your Calendars

June 4-5 (Fri & Sat) African Heritage Festival, Willie Green Center, Tuscumbia.  African dance, music, drums, traditional attire.  Great food. Free event.

June 5 (Sat) – Muscle Shoals Street Car Show, Spring Park, Tuscumbia. All day show of cars older than 1972.

June 11-July 17 (Fri & Sat, only) – Gates 7pm/Show 8 pmMiracle Worker play, outdoor theater on the grounds of Ivy Green, Helen Keller Birthplace. Reserved & general admission tickets. For more info: 256-383-4066.

June 24-27 – (Thurs, Fri, Sat) Helen Keller Festival, Tuscumbia. Parade and music downtown on Thursday evening; concerts in Spring Park on Friday & Saturday.

July 15-17 – (Thurs, Fri, Sat) 25th Annual Saddle Up for St. Jude, Gardiner Farm, Tuscumbia.  Hundreds of acres of trail riding, camping, live auction, vendors, concessions. Concerts featuring Shenandoah, Clint Black, and much more!

July 23-August 1 – (10 days of music) – 40th Annual W. C. Handy Music Festival, Various locations across the Muscle Shoals area.  Music across all genres. For more info: www.wchandymusicfestival.com
