If you work or play outdoors you need to be safe keep mosquito repellant on hand. The Alabama Department of Public Health is advising you to protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses this summer. There have been no known cases of West Nile reported in The Shoals to date. Precaution is suggested until the threat of West Nile has passed.
Public health officials say this summer, six cases of the West Nile Virus have been reported in Alabama.
Cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis have also been found in horses in West Alabama.
Public health officials suggest using insect repellent when going outside, and wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially during dawn or dusk. You should also empty standing water around your home.
