Wendell Spragin Lang, 83, a lifelong resident of Madison County passed away on August 7, 2026 at Crestwood Medical Center.
Born on September 20, 1942, (yet celebrated on the 21st for years because that was also his father’s birthday), he was one of 12 children born to James and Wavie Lang. Wendell graduated from New Hope High School, then traveled to Chicago Illinois to attend computer electronics school where he met and married the love of his life, Kathie in 1963. Wendell moved his family back to Huntsville in 1968 and went to work for Huntsville Utilities until retiring at the young age of 55. Wendell took great pride in his family, loved tinkering in his shop and visiting with folks “around the holler”. He was an avid fan of Alabama football, a lover of John Deere tractors, Ram trucks and Crown Royal with a chaser of Mich Ultra.
Wendell is survived by his bride of 63 years, Kathie Louise Johnsen Lang, his brother Lawrence (Tot) Lang, two sisters, Barbara Mease (Ken) and Deborah Lang, sister-in-law Karen Anderson (Max) and brother-in-law Kenneth Johnsen, two daughters, Julie Lang Brakefield and Wendy Lang Lee, nine grandchildren Mandy, Madison Steele (Bennett) and Tanner Brakefield, Megan Davis, Jillian Heflin, Riley Lang and Olivia, Tyson (Hope) and Jackson Lee, seven great grandchildren and his favorite dog, Buddy. Wendell is survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends who he loved staying in touch with over the years.
Wendell is preceded in death by his only son, James Kenneth Lang, son-in-law George Brakefield, great granddaughter McKinley Jane Davis, grandson-in-law Keegan Davis, parents James and Wavie Lang, brothers Claude Sr, Robert, Jerry and Allen Lang and sisters Patricia England, Faye Freeman, Gail Harrell and Nell Lee and his most beloved dog, Charley.
Visitation will be Wednesday 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will follow at 1:00 pm. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tanner Brakefield, Tyson Lee, Riley Lang, Jackson Lee, Bennett Steele and Wayne Lang.
