It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wanda Steen, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who left this world peacefully on October 10, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on February 18, 1953, in Oxford, Alabama, Wanda was the cherished daughter of Emmitt Godfrey and Lois Norton Godfrey. Her journey through life was marked by love, faith, and an unwavering devotion to her family.
Wanda was blessed with two loving marriages that brought immense joy and fulfillment to her life. She first married Robert Dale Monroe on April 4, 1979, and together they built a beautiful family until his passing in 1998. Her heart found love again when she reunited with her high school sweetheart, William Randall Steen, whom she married on August 20, 2000. Together, they shared 25 wonderful years of marriage, joyfully embracing their roles as Nana and Papa.
Wanda is survived by her devoted siblings, Marie Couch and her husband James, Cheryl Bonds and her husband Richard, and June Ottinger and her husband Richard. Her legacy of love continues through her daughters, Kendra Monroe and Karma Monroe along with her husband Mark. Wanda’s life was further enriched by her six grandchildren: Casey Cook, Kara Cook, Jessica Brothers and her husband Kevin, Destiny Cooper and her husband Matt, Miranda Gurley, and Robert Cooper and his wife Savannah. Her eight great-grandchildren—Sophie Rollins, Hadlie Jones, Lucas Rollins, Atlas Laminack, Jamison Robison, Delilah Robison, Avacyn Cooper, and Juniper Cooper—were her greatest joy, and she cherished each of them deeply.
A valued member of the Oxford Church of Christ for over 20 years, Wanda’s faith was a guiding light throughout her life. Her church family was dear to her heart, and she often shared fond memories of her childhood in Jacksonville, Alabama. Wanda’s passions included nurturing her vibrant garden, delighting in the company of birds, and caring for her beloved dogs. She found immense happiness in hosting family gatherings, where her love was felt by all who were fortunate enough to be in her presence.
Wanda was predeceased by her parents, Emmitt and Lois Godfrey, and her beloved husband, William Steen. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who knew her and loved her.
A service to honor and celebrate Wanda’s life will be held on October 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM at the Oxford Church of Christ, located at 89 Hamric Dr E, Oxford, Alabama.
