Funeral service for W.L. “Dub” Martin, 86, of Decatur, will be Saturday, December 14, 2013, at noon at St. Luke United Methodist Church with Reverend Dean Bowers and Reverend Bobby Ray Halbrooks officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon prior to the service. Burial will follow in Salem United Methodist Cemetery.
Mr. Martin, who died December 11, 2013, at his residence, was born May 1, 1927, in Winston County to Joe Morrison Martin and Viola LeMay Martin. He retired from Ingall’s Shipyard after a lifelong career as a certified welder.
Mr. Martin’s favorite hobby was gardening. He enjoyed seeing the fruits of his labor. He loved his family and church family at St. Luke United Methodist Church. Included in his family was his fur child, “Danny Boy”. Mr. Martin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and he loved his country and until the end of his life, he loved to discuss political current events. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Dugger Martin; son, Larry Craig Martin of Falkville; daughters, Sharron Martin Cook of Decatur, Melissa Martin Schafer (Bob) of Decatur and Anita Martin Harrison (Tony) of Haleyville; five grandchildren, Meghann, Lauren, David, Joseph and Avery; and three great-grandchildren, Craig, Piper and Emmett.
Pallbearers will be Tony Bolan, Rick Herron, John Pearce, Mark Baker, Billy Martin and Mike Vest.
Memorial gifts may be made to St. Luke UMC Building Fund.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley. A special thanks goes to his physicians, Dr. Charles Prickett and Dr. Joseph Backe, who provided years of compassionate care. We thank the staff of Decatur-Morgan Hospital who cared for our father over the last years on numerous occasions. We can never adequately thank the wonderful staff, Tim and Shirley, from McAbee Medical for their dedication and service.
