Virginia Sparks Calvin, 92 of Athens, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020 at her residence. Mrs. Calvin was born Nov. 3, 1928 in Bishop, AL to Clarence Daniel Sparks and Ruby Jane Morgan Sparks.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Theo Wesley Calvin, Jr., one sister, Elisabeth Childs, two brothers, Morgan Sparks and Jack Farned.

Survivors include one brother, Harold Sparks of Muscle Shoals, AL; three sisters, Miram Smith (Dewell) of Booneville, MS; Betty Sue Askew and Katherine Piorkowski both of Ohio; her sister-in-law, Lanette Calvin of Decatur, AL; her special friends, Wendell and Gracelia Shannon of Athens, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Calvin graduated from Athens State with a BA degree. She taught school for a brief period. Mrs. Calvin started a career at the First Federal Savings Bank in Athens where she served in many capacities for over 30 years and achieved the position of being City President of the Athens branch. After her retirement she served on the Board of Directors.

She received multiple awards from the Alabama League of Savings Institutions. She was a member of the Rotary Club in Athens where she was awarded the “Paul Harris Fellow” award. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce where she served as President and received the “Citizen of the Year” award. She was recognized for her support of the “Boys and Girls Club”, “Habitat for Humanity”, CASA, Programs for the homebound, United Way and numerous other civic organizations. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Athens where she was installed as an ordained Elder and a long serving choir member.

A graveside service will be held Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Dayton Wilson officiating.
