veronicaVeronica “Ronnie” Kavanagh, 87 years old of Huntsville, Alabama died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday April 10th 2014.

She was born to the late Leo and Veronica Koertgen on December 17, 1926 in Chicago Illinois. She worked in Chicago at the Northern Trust Bank where she met her husband John Kavanagh. They married on August 18, 1951, in Hawaii where he was stationed with the U.S. Marines. They moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1971 from Arlington Heights, Illinois for his job at Redstone Arsenal.

Ronnie was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary Council 4080, and also volunteered at Crestwood Hospital. In addition to the deep love for her family, her biggest passions were bowling (in three leagues), working in her yard, playing cards and Bingo with “The Girls”.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband John, her daughter Maureen Kelley, her brother Leo Koertgen and her sister Mary Orrell. She is survived by her twin brother, Jim Koertgen, of Dundee, Illinois. She was loving mother to Kevin (Patsy) Kavanagh, Patricia (Chuck) Anderson, Timothy (Leeanne) Kavanagh, Thomas (Debbie) Kavanagh, Brian (Patrice) Kavanagh, and James (Tracy) Kavanagh. She was grandmother to 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Our Mother, known as Veronica, Vera, Ronnie, Gazoon Zoons, Mom, Grandma, and Mana, will always be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who loved spending time and laughing with her family and friends. She will be missed but never forgotten.

A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She will be laid to rest at Maple Hill Cemetery
