Vera Joyce Mayes, age 89 of Huntland, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Elk River Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Franklin County, she was born in Estill Springs on March 20, 1936, to the late Fred and Marquerite (Statum) Whaley. Before her retirement, she was employed for many years as the secretary at Huntland School. Vera enjoyed tending to her home, whether it was gardening, cleaning, or cooking wonderful meals for her family. She was a great seamstress and enjoyed sewing projects. But most of all, she cherished the time spent with her beloved family. Vera was a member of Huntland Church of Christ and will be remembered for her kind and generous nature. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Craig Mayes; and siblings, Howard Whaley, Debbie Ingleberger, Freddie Whaley, and Steve Whaley. Vera is survived by her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Byron Mayes; grandchildren, Connor (Jordan) Mayes, and Courtnee (Whitson) Moore; great-grandchildren, Boone Moore, Milan Moore, and Julie Mayes; daughter-in-law, Sheree Mayes; and siblings, Annie Partin, Bonnie (Howard) Harvey, and Kenneth (Irene) Whaley. Visitation will be from 3-6pm on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Bro. Kyle Macon officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
