Venis Yvonne Hart, a beacon of faith, love, and kindness, entered eternal rest on February 13, 2025. Born on May 15, 1936, to Roosevelt and Ella Johnson in Charlotte, North Carolina, Venis’ life was a testament to devotion, resilience, and service.
Venis’ educational journey began at Myers Street Elementary School in Charlotte, continued at J.D. Dickerson Elementary School in Vidalia, Georgia, and culminated at West Charlotte Jr. and Senior High School. She earned induction into the National Honor Society. Following graduation, she pursued higher education at Johnson C. Smith College in Charlotte before enlisting in the United States Women’s Army Corps. Stationed at Carlisle Army Barracks in Pennsylvania, she met Timothy Hart, who affectionately called her “Jonnie.” Their love story blossomed, and on January 14, 1955, they married, embarking on a 62-year journey together until Timothy’s passing.
A woman of gentle yet adventurous spirit, Venis was unwavering in her commitment to God, family, community, and country. She prioritized keeping her family together and readily embraced the challenges of relocating to various military bases across the United States and abroad. When deployments separated families, Venis steadfastly maintained the home front, ensuring a nurturing and supportive environment for her children.
Wherever she resided, Venis actively engaged with her community. She served as a classroom mother, Parent-Teacher Association member, Red Cross volunteer, library volunteer, and Girl Scout leader. Her dedication earned her the honor of “Woman of the Year” during German-American Week in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany. As a welcoming family, Venis and Timothy often assisted other military families in adapting to new surroundings and navigating the difficulties of deployment.
Venis was passionate about cooking, sewing, travel, and family. She cherished opportunities for family visits and explored neighboring countries while living in Germany. She worked as an independent Avon consultant and a U.S. Army Post Exchange employee before becoming a loan officer and commercial teller at Fort Bliss, Texas.
In retirement, Venis resided with her husband in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Huntsville, Alabama, and spent much of her time in Los Angeles, California. She delighted in the company of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will deeply miss her.
Venis has now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Timothy; her parents: Ella and Roosevelt Johnson; her sisters: Margie Simms, Katie Williams, and Francine Whitfield. She is survived by her sister, Hattie Conwell (Levi); brother, Bruce Chandler; sister-in-love, Juanita McCoy; brother-in-love, Salanda Whitfield; daughters: Juana Hart, Audrey Snell (Reginald) and Tamara Hart; son, Timothy G. Hart; grandchildren: Kelli Hill, Mechele Hill, Timothy Hart, Jr., Victoria Hart, Reginald Snell, Jr., and Tyrone Snell; great-grandchildren: Liza, Zora, Kailey, Hailey, Damien, Aniyah, Jeremy, Jeremiah, and Jayla; and many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and their children.
Though she is deeply missed, her legacy of love, faith, and kindness continues to inspire all who are blessed to know her.
