FLORENCE – Taking a page from #GivingTuesday, the University of North Alabama Foundation hosted the first ever UNA Giving Day Nov. 29, to coincide with the global day of philanthropy.

Haley Brink, director of annual giving at UNA, said they weren’t looking for a set amount of money to raise, they were more concerned with the number of people who gave during the 24-hour fundraising drive.

“We had initially set a goal of 100 donors for the whole day,” said Brink.  “We were thrilled to get over 220 donors who helped us raise over $41,000.  Everybody really came together on this and we’re just so thankful for their support,” she said.

While the event mainly focused on social media, the University also hosted a phone-a-thon during the day and set up credit card machines around campus to collect additional donations.

Official numbers show UNA raised $41,868 from 224 donors, with a majority of the money going toward current use funds in the foundation.  Twenty-four of the donors were first-time donors to UNA.  Brink said they hope to increase in both amount and new donors next year.
