FLORENCE– The University of North Alabama Office of Academic Affairs, along with other community and campus sponsors, hosted a celebration event for the winners and participants of various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) events held this year.

Participants from UNA’s Robotics, Rocketry and ROV (under-water robotics) competitions were honored Monday evening with awards and a reception. UNA currently hosts three STEM competitions each spring.  The programs involve around 400 students from over 50 schools in three states.

In addition to recognizing the participants, the celebration was also meant to help kick-off UNA’s STEM Outreach Initiative.  The goal of the initiative is to promote UNA as a school of choice for those interested in careers in the STEM field, while also highlighting the many programs offered by UNA.

The event took place in the GUC Performance Center and feature several area schools, teachers, principals, parents, community members and leaders, including UNA President, Dr. Ken Kitts and UNA Provost, Dr. Ross Alexander.

Event organizers said close to 250 people registered for the event.
