UNA’s Fall Commencement Taking Place This Weekend…December 12

Like-UNA1FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama will host two commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m., in Flowers Hall.

As in years past, the graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing will participate in the first ceremony at 10:00 a.m.  The graduates from the College of Business and the College of Education and Human Sciences will participate in the second ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

Recipients of the coveted Keller Key Award will be announced at both ceremonies.  The Keller Key Award is presented to a graduating student or students with the highest grade-point average in the senior class.

This year’s festivities will also feature a unique commencement speaker, Patterson Hood, best known as the front man, singer, songwriter and guitar player for the critically acclaimed rock-and-roll band Drive-By Truckers.

Born and raised in Florence, Hood is also a writer of essays, columns and short stories.  His band, Drive-By Truckers, has released 12 albums and played more than 2,000 shows in the past 19 years. They also recently released a 35-song, career spanning box set earlier this year that was recorded live at The Fillmore in San Francisco.

Hood is also familiar with public speaking having lectured or conducted classes at Princeton, The University of Indiana, The University of Georgia, and The University of Alabama.

Hood attended the University of North Alabama before he moved to Athens, Georgia, where he lived for 21 years until earlier this year when he relocated with his family to Portland, Oregon.
