FLORENCE– The University of North Alabama Percussion Orchestra will present its spring concert Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Muscle Shoals High School Auditorium. Admission is free.
Directed by Dr. Iain Moyer, director of percussion and assistant director of bands at UNA, the concert will feature works by David Maslanka, David Gillingham and Pat Metheny.
The UNA Percussion Orchestra will share the program with the award-winning Muscle Shoals High School Percussion Ensemble, directed by Will Campbell. The Muscle Shoals ensemble will perform its 2013 Winter Guard International Show, “The Music of Samuel Barber and Alberto Ginastera,” arranged by Moyer.
“It is very unusual for a high school and a college ensemble to collaborate in the way that these two groups do, but the Muscle Shoals High School percussion program, developed over the past several years by current band director David Waters, is one of the very best in the entire nation,” said Dr. David McCullough, chair of the Department of Music and Theatre. “The two ensembles are able to communicate in a way that’s quite unique.”
