FLORENCE – Dr. Will Brewer, an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of North Alabama, has been selected as one of the 30 nursing faculty from across the United States to participate in the 2020 American Association of Colleges of Nursing-Apple Digital Innovation Bootcamp: From Content to Action, which is tentatively scheduled to take place July 13-16 in Austin, Texas, pending developments with the COVID-19 crisis.

Dr. Brewer was selected for the Boot camp as a result of his proposal involving iPads. The iPads could be employed in simulation labs in the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions in order to help students learn and provide reports to each other and attending physicians. The technology could also be used for tele-health purposes.

“We all have this wonderful technology that’s in place, and, if we can use it to help save a life or intervene early enough on a condition, we can prepare the students to be as prepared as possible for their careers in the field,” Dr. Brewer said. “If we can use this and provide reports on changing conditions for the patients, we’ve done our jobs. And it’s made the hospital a safer and better place.”

In keeping with the association’s strategic goal to serve as the driving force for innovation and excellence in academic nursing, AACN launched this initiative to provide new opportunities for nursing faculty to leverage the latest technology to enhance learning in the classroom, laboratory, online, and clinical settings. Those invited to participate in this highly interactive event will enjoy sessions on preparing digital content, developing iOS mobile apps and multi-touch books, and creating an engaging learning environment.

“Nurse educators must be open to embracing new technology and exploring fresh approaches to teaching in order to satisfy the diverse learning needs of today’s nursing student,” said AACN President and Chief Executive Officer Deborah Trautman. “I am so pleased to welcome the latest cohort of nursing faculty to this year’s Bootcam and look forward to the innovations that will result from this unique immersion experience.

Dr. Brewer is the only representative among the 30 from a university in Alabama.
