ATHENS-A statement from Police Chief Floyd Johnson regarding the two students at Athens High School that were struck in the crosswalk Tuesday, April 21:
“This morning there was an accident in front of Athens High School involving 2 students that were pedestrians crossing US 31. The students were crossing in the cross walk from west to east. The students had the signal to cross in the cross walk. The driver of the vehicle that struck the students was making a left turn from Hobbs Street to north on US 31. The driver hit the students then kept going north. He then turned around and went back to the school where there was a police car. The driver stated the sun was in his eyes and he didn’t see the students crossing the road. Both students were transported to the Athens Limestone Emergency Room by Ambulance with what appeared to be minor injurers. The accident occurred at 08:10 this morning. The driver of the car was Jose Antonio Perez. Mr. Perez was given a citation for driving without drivers license.”
