HARTSVILLE, TN-On Thursday morning the Tennessee Valley Authority used controlled demolition charges to safely implode the 540’ hyperbolic cooling tower at the Hartsville site in Trousdale County, Tennessee. Safety is our top priority, and we used expert demolition contractors and coordinated with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure safety and minimum disruption to the community.
Located in Hartsville, TN the 540’ cooling tower was originally constructed in the 1970s as part of a planned nuclear plant project that was later discontinued. The cooling tower was never placed into service and has remained an unused structure on the site for decades. TVA has prioritized removal of the structure as part of its broader effort to remove obsolete infrastructure, improve public safety and prepare sites for possible future redevelopment. TVA remains committed to unleashing American energy by providing and maintaining a reliable, modern energy system while making sites like Hartsville safer and ready for tomorrow’s potential opportunities.
