THE SHOALS-The Tennessee Valley Authority is inviting the public to join TVA biologists on Wheeler Reservoir as they conduct the annual spring Sport Fish Survey.
TVA biologists will collect samples of fish using a harmless boat-mounted electrofishing technique. Fish are temporarily stunned, which causes them to float to the water’s surface, where they are collected, counted, weighed, measured and checked for overall health, then returned to the water.
The surveys will be conducted on April 1-3. The first day, April 1, the crews will leave at Second Creek from the boat ramp on
Highway 72. On April 2, they will depart from the First Creek boat ramp at Joe Wheeler State Park, and on April 3 they will depart from the Elk River ramp at Highway 72.
The survey boats will depart at 7:30 a.m. CDT from the designated boat ramp each day. Guests should arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and will need an approved personal floatation device, or life jacket. Please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen and insect repellent as appropriate.
Anyone interested in going with TVA biologists on the survey should call the TVA Environmental Information Center at 800-882-5263 to schedule a time. Space is limited. The Environmental Information Center operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT, Monday-Friday.
