Jeff LyashKNOXVILLE, TN ― The TVA Board of Directors announced today that Jeffrey Lyash will become President and CEO of the $11 billion federal corporation, effective April 2019. Lyash, 57, will succeed William D. Johnson, who has served as TVA’s second President and CEO since 2013.

Lyash is president and CEO of Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG), one of the largest electrical generating companies in Canada. He was formerly President of CB&I Power and Executive Vice President of Energy Supply for Duke Energy. He began his career in the utility industry in 1981, joining Progress Energy in 1993 where he held a wide range of management and executive roles that gave him extensive corporate and operations leadership experience.

Before joining Progress Energy, Lyash worked for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in a number of senior technical and management positions throughout the northeast United States and in Washington, D.C. He has held a senior reactor operator license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Lyash is currently Chair of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), an international non-profit organization for public interest energy and environmental research. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University.

“The TVA position is attractive — particularly at this juncture,” said TVA Board Chair Richard Howorth. “The progress that Bill Johnson has accomplished with TVA has been remarkable to witness. His leadership and guidance have put TVA on a clear path of continuous improvement — momentum that I believe Jeff Lyash will enjoy carrying further. It is now about creating and leading the next long-range plan to address industry challenges and meet consumer demands.

“Jeff Lyash rose to the top of a strong pool of candidates eager to come to TVA due to his strong utility experience, passion for the public power mission of service and ability to engage employees, customers and communities.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead TVA, an organization with a great sense of purpose not only to provide reliable, low-cost energy — which is a critical underpinning for how we live —  but to improve the lives of people of the Tennessee Valley and the United States through economic development and environmental stewardship,” said Lyash.

Lyash will join TVA in early April and operate from its Knoxville headquarters. Johnson will continue to lead TVA through the transition.

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power companies serving nearly 10 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation.
