SHEFFIELD – A single-car accident from early this morning has left 3 people dead. Colbert County Coroner, Carlton Utley tells the Quad-Cities Daily that in all of his nearly 2 decades as Coroner, this is the worst he has seen for a single vehicle accident. “The car was cut in half,” Utley said, “The vehicle ย lost control and hit one of those new traffic signal poles on Jackson and 28th, and split in half.” All three passengers were declared dead at the scene.

Utley said the identifications of the accident victims were being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

The scene this morning had been cleaned up by daybreak. However, the paint markings on the street, the scuff marks on the asphalt and curbs, the damage to the traffic signal pole, and the remnants of music CD’s on the ground bore testament to the violence of the crash.

Here are some photos of the scene.
