In December 2004, a tsunami hit the coast of Kenya. In the aftermath, a hippo calf named Owen was stranded. A group of fishermen worked tirelessly to rescue him. They took him to the Haller Park nature preserve where he was adopted by a 130-year-old tortoise named Mzee.
The two animals soon became inseparable—they ate, played and swam together. They even developed a special communication system. Photos of the duo began to circulate and soon became international celebrities. Their friendship was turned into a books for children and their lives are now followed by millions around the world.
