ATHENS-Summertime fare in North Alabama invariably includes a tomato sandwich made with succulent tomatoes fresh from the garden.
On Saturday, Aug. 17, visitors at the Athens Saturday Market can tempt their taste buds with fresh tomato sandwiches. The Market is hosting Tomato Sandwich Day.
“We will have sandwich chefs on site to make these for our visitors, and it will be
absolutely free,” said Market Committee Chair Laurie Glenn. “These type activities help introduce our community to the men and women who grow our food.”
After filling their bellies with this tasty treat, visitors can enjoy shopping for produce, flowers, baked goods and more while enjoying music by Blue Velvet. Vendors who plan to be at the Aug. 17 venue are:
● Spradlin Farms – peaches, peas, salsa, relishes, homemade ice cream
● 1818 Farms – cut flowers, herbs, eggs, bath products
● Janna Whitley – fresh herbs and herb products, flowers
● Healthy, Happy, Hummus – a variety of hummus made from Buddy’s tomatoes
● Bev-Ann Herriges – gluten free baked goods
● Picasso’s Grill – green smoothies, red smoothies, breakfast quiches and fruit
● Henry Carter – tomatoes, corn, okra, garden plants
● Tom McDaniel – Honey and beeswax products
● Clover Coffee – hot coffee, cold coffee, coffee concentrate, fresh roasted beans, fresh roasted ground coffee
● J.B. Turner – field corn, sweet corn, peas
● Samovar Gardens – herb teas to drink at the market or to prepare at home
● Suzanne’s Bakery – fresh-baked bread, muffins, pies
● Tune Farms – tomatoes, herbs, other produce, basil lemonade
● Chris Slayton – melons, banana peppers, bell peppers, other produce
● Humble Heart Farms – variety of goat cheeses
● Buddy’s Tomatoes and Produce – heirloom tomatoes, other produce, eggs
