Tom Newby passed away at home on April 10. He attended Joe Bradley School and Butler High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served until medically retired in 1966. In 1966 he met his future wife Nancy who lived across the street. Tom was Nancy’s husband for 49 years. He attended Calhoun Community College and the University of Alabama Huntsville where he earned an associates, baccalaureate, and master’s degree. Tom was the first person in his family tree to earn a college education.
Tom served the Department of Defense as a civilian until his retirement in 1984. His career began as a Contract Specialist and was promoted to Management Analyst where he focused on detecting fraud in the procurement system. After retiring from civil service, Tom served the Madison County Sheriff’s Reserve with great enthusiasm. His last role was serving as Judge Richardson’s Bailiff at the main courthouse downtown.
Tom was an active member of The Blue Knights, Brothers in the Wind Masonic M o t o r c y c l e Assn, Rocket City Gold Wing Riders, Solar Masonic Lodge #914, and the Shriners Motor Corp.
He was p r o c e e d e d in death by his parents T.A. Newby and Emma Newby Stanley, brother George Lee Stanley Jr. and sister Edra Terrien all of Huntsville, AL. Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy, son Thomas Scott Newby of Oxford, MS, and daughter Jennifer Harris (Matt), grandchildren Sam and Kate Harris all of Huntsville. He is also survived by Bother-in-Law Max Carter Northcutt of Winchester, TN as well as nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Berryhill Funeral Home on April 12th 6-8 PM and graveside service at Valhalla Memory Gardens on April 13th at 2 pm.
