helen kellerTUSCUMBIA-For the 36th consecutive year, the Alabama town of Tuscumbia, where Helen Keller was born and spent her childhood, will welcome thousands of visitors from across the U.S. to celebrate the life and legacy of the SONY DSCtown’s most famous citizen. Normal at her birth in 1880, the child was stricken with an illness before she was two years old that left her blind, deaf, and unable to communicate.  When she was seven, Annie Sullivan came to be her teacher.  The famous breakthrough took place when Annie spelled w-a-t-e-r into Helen’s hand as she pumped water from the backyard well. Suddenly Helen grasped the meaning of the word and came to understand her world.  This dramatic moment is captured during performances of “The Miracle Worker.” This award-winning drama will be presented on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, during the festival at 8:00 each evening, taking place in an outdoor theater on the grounds of “Ivy Green,” the home where the Keller family lived and where the actual “miracle” took place.  Tickets are available by calling 256-383-4066.  (“Miracle Worker” season runs Fridays and Saturdays, June 6- July 12.)

In addition to this signature event, the Helen Keller Festival offers a variety of musical acts, special events, and an outstanding arts & crafts show/sale.
