3ATHENS-On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 61 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Today, the Athens Police Department was joined by the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department and community to remember the 9 in-the-line-of-duty deaths in Limestone County.
During his prayer, Limestone County Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said it did not matter whose badge they wore but that they wore the badge for us.
