rabbitMONTGOMERY-Did you know that there are four different species of rabbits found in Alabama? Although the physical differences between them may be subtle, the four species found in this state are swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus), eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus), Appalachian cottontail (Sylvilagus obscurus), and marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris). Each species has a slightly different habitat preference. Swamp rabbits, as their name implies, tend to spend majority of their time in and around swampy areas where native wetland plant species are more prevalent. Marsh rabbits have relatively shorter ears and are found mainly in brackish marsh habitat, swamps, and bottomlands along the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta in Southwest Alabama. The Appalachian cottontail is generally only found near higher elevations of the Piedmont and Appalachian Mountains. Eastern cottontails are the most common species that can be found statewide. They are highly adaptable to a wide variety of habitats and are often found in your own backyard.
