The “CSI Effect”

csiFLORENCE-The “CSI Effect” is the idea that members of the public and crime victims have developed a higher expectation on police officers to collect more forensic evidence and for investigators to obtain forensic results very rapidly. This is thought to be brought on by the proliferation of crime scene investigation based television shows.

Here is the reality: whether it is latent finger prints or DNA evidence, which is dnacollected regularly at crime scenes, the results are often months (or years) away, and often times the outcome is inconclusive.

Rest assured the Florence Police Department is trained on these matters, and does regularly seek to collect this evidence, however the results of these efforts will not be known for quite some time. Technology is rapidly improving in these areas, but as we know, technology is expensive. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is currently funded at lower levels than years past, and the technology that allows them to become more effective is becoming more expensive.

Bear with us, too often justice is not as swift as we would choose, but we are diligently seeking it on your behalf nonetheless. -Florence, Alabama PD
