FLORENCE-The Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council 2recently tailgated with the lions at Braly Stadium serving free food composed with local ingredients. The tailgating took place during the University of North Alabama’s Preview Day outside of the stadium, and more than 350 people were served. The food was prepared by local Chef Kevin Kilburn.

RC&D tailgated November 8, 2014 during UNA’s Preview Day in which several prospective students were touring the campus. Many of these prospective students experienced a taste of the Shoals when they stopped by the RC&D’s tailgating location. The local produce came from Jack O’ Lantern Farms and the local ground beef was provided by Cox Butcher Shop.

Local Chef Kevin Kilburn, owner of Southern Farm Table in Central, prepared the food. “It is very rewarding to present new, good ideas for quick preparation for events such as tailgating, celebrations and family get-togethers, and incorporating the use of local food and ingredients gives you a good feeling because you are helping a local merchant or farmer, and of 3course the taste and freshness makes the difference,” remarked Chef Kilburn.

Nancy Gonce of Florence, Alabama expressed her appreciation to RC&D for their impressive leadership in turning this wonderful idea into a successful reality. Roger Hayes, Chairman of the Northwest AL RC&D Council commented, “The council appreciates the opportunity to support our local economy in supporting local farmers who are growing local, healthy food.” The Northwest Alabama RC&D Council expects to host this event again next football season. Roar Lions!
