Sylvia Obelia Gilbert Brock, age 85, passed away peacefully at Alive Hospice surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sylvia was a Van Buren County native born on June 10, 1940, to the late John and Maude Thomison Gilbert.
Sylvia served as personnel manager for USA Enterprises for thirty-two years and ended her working career assisting her husband with Brock Photography for over twenty years. She graduated from Van Buren County High School, Class of 1959.
The most important thing in Sylvia’s life was her family and church. She was a loving, devoted wife to her husband Gene, and a caring Mother to her son Dewayne. She was a dedicated member of Spencer Church of Christ for over sixty years. Sylvia was a warmhearted person who devoted much of her time to helping others through her cooking, friendship, and thoughtful acts of service. She found great joy in caring for others and was always willing to lend a hand or share a warm meal. When she wasn’t helping someone in need, Sylvia loved spending time in her garden. She was well known for growing beautiful flowers and tending a plentiful vegetable garden, a reflection of the care and dedication she put into everything she did.
Sylvia will be deeply missed by her family, her church family, and the many friends whose lives were touched by her kindness.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by, brothers; Billy and Loyd Gilbert, sisters; Vera Bouldin, Beulah Evans, Juanita Taylor, Lucille Van Winkle, Beatrice Evans, and Roberta Parmley.
Sylvia is survived by, her loving husband of sixty-seven years, Edward Gene Brock, loving son; Edward Dewayne (Darleen) Brock, sisters; Rachel (Monroe) Oakes of Rock Island, Wanda Warner of Crossville, special grandson; Oliver Walker of Cookeville, Special granddaughter; Desirray Gay of Georgetown, IN. special friends; Cliff (Stella) Hale, Jimmy (Diane) Hodges, R.C. (Michelle) Christian . A large extended family also survives.
Funeral services will be held Sunday March 8, 2026, at 2:00pm in the Layne Chapel with Bro. R. C. Christian officiating. Burial will follow in the Cummingsville Cemetery. Visitation times are Saturday 4:00pm-8:00pm and Sunday 10:00am till time of service at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Spencer Church of Christ or Cummingsville Cemetery. Donations can be made at the funeral home.
