Sylvia Dot Griggs Billups, age 84, of Arab, Alabama, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of June 10, 2025, at Hospice Family Care in Huntsville, AL. Born on February 21, 1941, in Marshall County, AL, Dot was the cherished daughter of Evie Otto Griggs and Edna Lee Burgett Griggs. She was a lifetime resident of the Arab community and was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. Her faith guided her life and she found comfort and strength in her spirituality.
Dot was a proud graduate of Jacksonville State University, earning her degree in 1964. She became a devoted educator dedicating 37 years of her life as a librarian in Madison County Schools. She motivated, encouraged and created a love for reading and learning in countless students.
Dot’s love of music brought joy to many. She had a special gift for playing both the piano and the guitar, often sharing this passion with her brother and dear friends through years of memorable jam sessions. Dot will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her love and dedication to her family. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of music, education, and faith.
Dot’s family and friends celebrating her remarkable life and taking comfort in their cherished memories include her cousin, Maxine Johnson (Gail) and special friend, David Billups. Preceding Dot in death are her parents, Evie and Edna Griggs: sister, Vera Burgett; and her brother, William Thomas Griggs.
Services for Dot will include a visitation 10:00am on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation beginning at 11:00am with Brother Kenneth Tyler officiating. Dot will be laid to rest in the Mt. View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be from the Joppa Volunteer Fire Department. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel entrusted with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
