Susan Goodwin Delony, 90, of Tuscumbia, AL died peacefully at home after an extended illness on March 17, 2014.
Susan Goodwin Delony, 90, of Tuscumbia, AL died peacefully at home after an extended illness on March 17, 2014. Miss Delony was one of three children born to John Edward Delony and Louise King Delony. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, two brothers, John Edward Delony, III and Clifford King Delony and first cousin Richard Bates King. She is survived by second cousins, Susan King Gregory of Greenwood, Mississippi and Elizabeth King Murray of Pinson, Alabama.
Miss Delony, a 1940 Deshler High School graduate, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics from Auburn University in 1945. After receiving a Masters degree from Cornell University in 1951 she did post graduate work at Michigan State University and Columbia University. She received Advance Course Degrees from Florida State, Montana State and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Miss Delony served as an Instructor at Woman’s College, University of North Carolina, Assistant Professor at Montana State University and Auburn University before serving as Assistant Dean of Women at Auburn University for eight years, where she was recruited to become dean of Women at Clemson University.
Susan Delony finished her noted career at Clemson University where she served as Dean of Women from 1963-1970 and Dean of Student Life until her retirement in 1979. In this leadership role, she served on many advisory committees giving direction and guidance to the changing roles of women in American society. She was rewarded for her service to Clemson University by receiving an honorary doctorate degree in 2000.
Professional organizations and affiliations include: American Association of University Women, National Association of Women, Deans Administrator and Counselors, Southern College Personnel Association, South Carolina Association of Women Deans and Counselors, Association of Women Professionals, American College Personnel Association, Omicron Nu, Pi Lambda Theta, Alpha Lambda Delta, the Blue Key Honor Society and the Mortar Board Honor Society. Miss Delony was a member of Chi Omega.
As a firm believer that all young people should be well versed in art, music and travel, Miss Delony encouraged them to obtain a well-rounded education. To this end, she practiced what she preached. She traveled through out Europe, the Near East, Scandinavia, Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and China, seeking out the best that each culture had to offer, enjoying life to the fullest.
After retiring in 1979, Miss Delony returned to her hometown becoming an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tuscumbia, the Muscle Shoals District Service League, the Maud Lindsay Study Club, and the Tennessee Valley Art Association Guild. She served on the Board of the Friends of the Helen Keller Library.
Special thanks are given to Miss Delony’s caregivers: Leslie Malone, Lisa Campbell, Tanbra Traynom, Glenda Welborn, Liz Morris, Linda Howard and Amedisys Hospice Nurse, Courtney Abston. Miss Delony loved to work in her yard and was very appreciative of the efforts of Dewayne Cox and Charles Tidwell which enabled her to enjoy the fruits of her labor for many years.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday March 20, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Oakwood Cemetery in Tuscumbia. Rev. Randy E. Thompson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Presbyterian Church in Tuscumbia, Alabama would be appreciated.
