Dr. Sue Wilson Reed, 63, of Florence, passed away on Thursday, August 2nd after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church on Sunday, August 5th, at 2:00pm with visitation following in the fellowship hall. Officiating with be Dr. Tom Pebworth, & Rev. Laura Hutchinson.
Sue was born in Cartersville, GA on April 21, 1949 and was a native of Kingston, GA. She graduated from Berry College, magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in History & Education, from Georgia State University with a Master’s degree in Counseling and from the University of Alabama with an Ed.D degree in Higher Education Administration. She worked at the University of North Alabama for 25 years and was the Dean of Enrollment Services when she retired.
Sue was a strong advocate of education and worked in higher education all of her adult life. She served in various roles in the Alabama Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (ALACRAO) including President, Secretary & Treasurer. She also served on the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (SACRAO) as chair of various committees & served as Secretary within the organization. She was also a member of American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). While at UNA, she was very involved on campus and served in many roles there including Women in Higher Education, Cooperative Campus Ministry, ACHE Task Force and others. Sue always had a commitment to academic excellence and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Some of her favorite pastimes included reading and watching college football and basketball as well as spending time with her husband, Hovey and family, especially her only grandson, Andrew Mitchell.
She is survived by her husband, Hovey G. Reed, her only Daughter, Tina Wilson Mitchell (Joey) and only grandson, Andrew Mitchell all of Florence, Brother, Tommy Jones (Becky), nephew Jacob Jones, all of Kingston, GA., Nephew John Harkness , Jr of Jackson, GA, Niece Susan Harkness Feiler, of North Carolina, brother in law John Harkness, Jackson, GA, stepdaughters Andie Sousa (Hank) of Palo Alto, California, Jeanne Reed (Bruce) of Sacramento California, Suzanne McKiernan (Joe) of Billings, Montana, and stepson Mick Reed (Shannon), of Knoxville, Tennessee.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas F. Jones and Madge C. Jones, of Kingston, GA and Sister, Carolyn Jones Harkness, of Jackson, GA.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patricia Auxier, Glenwood Nursing Home & Rehab and Dr. Robert Webb for their kindness and compassion.
