COLBERT COUNTY-A strong line of thunderstorms roared through the area on Monday afternoon, October 13th . The first line came through Colbert County at around 5 pm and lasting throughout the night. There was widespread storm damage in both Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals from the fast-moving cold front. Two people in Tuscumbia were trapped inside their home on Fourth Street. After their rescue they were taken to Helen Keller Hospital where they were treated and release.
Power outages are widespread in Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals including the Colbert County Courthouse that has limited power and no telephone service according to Probate Judge Daniel Rosser. Schools are closed in Tuscumbia and had a later start time in Muscle Shoals. About 80% of the power has been restored in Tuscumbia and the Utility Department hopes to have power restored later today.
Damage in Muscle Shoals was around the intersection of Woodward and Second Street. Two convenience stores and several other businesses in the area were damaged. More than 30 utility poles were damaged and will have to be replaced.
Winds were measured by the National Weather Service at 60 miles perm hour at the Shoals Regional Airport at around 7:30 pm last night. The National Weather Service is going to investigate the wind damage in Colbert County to determine if the damage in Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals was caused by a tornado or just strong winds.
