ATHENS-FEATUREDATHENS-Two major events will impact traffic in the downtown Athens area on Saturday, April 26.

The annual Cars and Bikes on The Square show will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said all four streets around The Square will be blocked. In addition, Jefferson Street will be blocked between Hobbs and Green streets, and Market Street will be blocked between Madison and Marion streets.

“We will leave the alley behind Limestone Drug open so that customers can go through drive-thru,” Johnson said.

Earth Day will be at Big Spring Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Johnson said Beaty Street between Hobbs and Washington streets will be closed for this event. In addition, Market Street east of Clinton Street to the park will be closed.

City and county lots will be open for public parking, and Earth Day attendees can park at Athens State University’s lots. There also will be on-street parking in marked parking spots on streets that are open.

Two other events occurring on Saturday in the downtown area will also impact traffic. The Athens Historic Walking Tour will start at the Athens-Limestone Visitors Center by Big Spring Memorial Park. Attendees will meet at 9:45 a.m. and start the tour at 10 a.m.

There also is the Prancing Paws Carnival Celebration for pets at Athens State University from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We ask that motorists use caution in these areas as we will have pedestrians walking to the different events,” Johnson said.
