Steve Stanley
I’m running for Mayor of Sheffield because I believe my experience, knowledge, ability, commitment and integrity make me uniquely qualified to lead the City of Sheffield forward over the next four years.
My over 30 years career in Information Technology implementing systems that support every aspect of large businesses and managing departments with annual budgets well over $1 million gives me a great background for running the City.
Serving over 20 years on the Planning Commission, 15 years as Chairman of the Sheffield Redevelopment Authority, 12 years on the Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Coordinating Committee and 3 terms on the City Council plus holding leadership positions with numerous community organizations has prepared me well for serving as Mayor.
Knowledge:
My degree from UNA in Business Management gave me a great background in management principles.
During my career I learned every aspect of how a large business operates; how to manage complex projects; and how to effectively manage employees.
The training I received from the Alabama League of Municipalities to achieve Advanced Certified Municipal Official status prepared me well to function as Mayor.
I’ve studied the City’s history and demographics. I know how we got where we are today. I understand the City’s challenges and opportunities. I have a thorough understanding of the City’s finances. I know every aspect of how the City operates. I know our municipal code and the Code of Alabama provisions governing municipalities.
Ability:
I’ve written and updated numerous ordinances and policies. I implemented our digital zoning map and made numerous improvements to the zoning ordinance to accommodate projects like Inspiration Landing and improve our ability to manage land use. I wrote the TVA Muscle Shoals Reservation Governance and Management Plan to enable annexation of 313 acres of TVA property. I arranged for annexation of The Old Railroad Bridge into Sheffield city limits. I acquired property necessary to build Inspiration Landing. I was instrumental in getting multiple grants. I managed the cleanup of the old municipal landfill and shooting range to enable the Inspiration Landing project.
Commitment:
For over twenty years, I have committed much of my time to working in numerous capacities without compensation to improve things in Sheffield and the Shoals Area. I’ve devoted twelve years to actively serving as the District 5 representative on the Sheffield City Council. I’ve demonstrated by my actions that I love Sheffield and care for the well-being of its citizens.
Integrity:
During my three terms on the Sheffield City Council, I have never made a decision or cast a vote based on whether it would gain or lose me a vote. I’ve never done anything for my personal benefit or the benefit of a friend or relative. My only consideration and motivation is to do what is in the best interest of the City of Sheffield.
I am self-funding my election campaign despite offers of contributions from several people of high moral character that I truly respect. I don’t want even the slightest implication that I owe anyone any special consideration.
As Mayor, I will treat everyone fairly and equally. Employees will be hired and promoted based solely on their qualifications, not who they know. Purchases of services and materials will be based solely on the best value to the City, not because of any personal relationship. Ordinances will be enforced consistently and fairly.
Sheffield has a sign ordinance similar to ordinances in Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals and Florence. Ours isn’t being enforced as it pertains to political signs. I wrote the ordinance and know its provisions. I won’t knowingly violate any law. Despite the disadvantage to my campaign, you won’t find my signs where they are prohibited by the ordinance. All of my signs are on property controlled by individuals by permission of the owner or occupant. None are on City owned and controlled property. Signs in residential zones are limited to six square feet. All of my signs larger than 18” by 24” are in business or industrial zones where they are permitted. For me, a law should be enforced and obeyed or changed.
