Stella Martha Smith Thompson, age 87, of Lexington, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015 after an extended illness. Mrs. Stella was a native of Loretto, Tennessee, and long-time resident of Lexington, Alabama. She along with her late husband, Mr. Arthur Lee (Heavy) Thompson, was the co-founder, co-owner of A.L. Thompson Builders’ Supply. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Lexington United Methodist Church. Sam Hayes and Phil Springer will be officiating. Burial will follow in Barnett Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Lexington United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by her sister, Sarah Ann Springer and husband, Willmyr, Florence, Alabama; her sister-in-law, Frances Smith; one daughter, Martha Lee Mitchell and husband, Kim, Lexington, Alabama; one son, Mickey Thompson and wife, Regina, Lexington, Alabama.
Six grandsons and one granddaughter, Todd and Alanna Sullivan, Chase Sullivan, Heath Thompson, Logan Thompson, Jacob and Amber Mitchell, and Lauren Bowen; three great-grandchildren, Katelyn Sullivan, Deacon Sullivan, and Silas Mitchell.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Clevie Smith; by her two brothers, Reab and Villard Smith; and her two sisters, Linice Smith and Geneva Jones.
Loretto Memorial Chapel is in charge of all arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mrs. Stella’s memory to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, Stella Thompson was a cherished member of her community and church. She loved her family and enjoyed cheering on her grandsons at every opportunity, especially at ballgames. An enthusiastic traveler, Mrs. Stella was always ready for a trip. Be it a Lexington High School sporting event, church social, beach retreat, or shopping trip, she cherished creating memorable moments with those she loved. From Florence, Alabama to Florence, Italy, Mrs. Stella loved life and experienced it with such joyful laughter, a characteristic that was beloved and will be sorely missed.
The family would like to thank the Lexington community for their love and support. They would also like to thank Florence Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of Mrs. Stella as she prepared for her final trip.
Pallbearers will include Rodney Jones, Steve Johnson, Jim Smith, Billy Don Thompson, Tommy Springer, Spencer Michael, Zac Bunnell, and Sam Newton.
Honorary pallbearers will include Bud Smith, Tommy Smith, Willmyr Springer, Terry Thompson, Rick Littrell, and the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
