Stanley Eugene Shipper – Obituary

Stanley Eugene Shipper, age 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Florence on the morning of July 16, 2018. Stanley was born in Decatur, Alabama, and grew up in Florence where he graduated from Coffee High School. After high school, he spent a year at Taft Preparatory School in Watertown, Connecticut, then attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating in 1951. Stanley served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, stationed in Germany.

After serving in the military, Stanley returned to Florence, where he joined the family business, Shipper Cotton Company, with his brother Edward. He married Jane Aldrich Jones, his wife of 55 years, and had two sons, Michael and David. Stanley later established a stock brokerage firm in Florence, before going to work as a financial officer for the First National Bank of Florence. He retired from SunTrust Bank after a 25-year career in banking.

Stanley was a man of honor and unwavering loyalty, who stood as an example of integrity to his family and the community. He was greatly loved and admired by his many friends and the family he leaves behind.

The family will receive friends at Elkins Funeral Home on Friday, July 20, 2018, from 2 to 4 p.m. A graveside funeral will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield on Monday, July 23, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Temple B’nai Israel in Florence or the Florence Public Library.

Stanley is survived by his wife Jane and son Michael. The family is grateful for the professionalism and commitment shown by Florence EldercareServices and Hospice of North Alabama during the final week of Stanley’s life.
