KILLEN-At 9:00 Am this morning, Friday, October 7 the Killen Police Chief Bryan Hammond, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton and Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler held a press conference regarding the standoff situation at the Super 8 Motel in Killen.
Tyler says there are two people are in the room and their involvementwith each other is not known at this time. Shots were fired for the first time by Collins at 6:30 A.M. on Thursday and again at 9:30 A.M. by Collins. He has been shooting at police all through the night.
“We are in no hurry the ball is in his (Eddie Collins) court”, Tyler said. Agencies from all over Alabama are assisting in this operation.
Collins has been in town for some time and has rented the room at the Super 8 Motel for an undetermined amount of time. It is unclear at this time why Collins is in the area.
Sheriff Singleton says they do not know who the people in the room with Collins are or what their relationship to Collins would be.
Chief Tyler says they have been in contact with Eddie Collins family and that the family has encouraged Collins to surrender. Tyler added that law enforcement has been in constant contact with Collins all throughout the night.
Boat traffic has been stopped both upstream and downstream due to shots being fired in the direction of Shoal Creek.
