Ice coats the Civilian Conservation Corps Tower at Cheaha State Park on Thursday, February 13, 2014.
MONTGOMERY-Cheaha State Park is temporarily closed due to the recent winter storm that crippled much of north Alabama with snow and ice. Cheaha should reopen sometime next week, but those with plans to visit the park are encouraged to call ahead of time. To contact the park, call 256-488-5111 or 800-610-5801.
Several inches of snow blanketed Cheaha State Park during the winter storm. Heavy coatings of ice also damaged or destroyed approximately 1,000 trees, and several power lines were brought down making travel unsafe within the park. Work crews are currently assessing the full impact of the storm and working to restore power to affected areas. No major structural damage to park facilities has been detected thus far.
When the storm hit there were no visitors in the park. Prior to the storm, park staff alerted all visitors with reservations that the park would be closed. All guests with reservations were either rerouted to another Alabama state park or given refunds. No injuries associated with the storm were reported within the park.
