Shooting Death….Suspect Claims Self Defense

shots firedDECATUR-On June 14 a 911 call was received by the Morgan County 911.  Officers responded found one male deceased.

“On June 14th, 2016, at 4:24 am the Morgan County E911 Center received a call of a shooting at 2110 Stratford Road Southeast Decatur. Officers with the Decatur Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the residence and arrived at 4:31 am.


Upon Officers arrival they encountered Vanessa Leffers in the driveway of the residence. Vanessa told officers that she had shot her estranged husband Jonathan Mark Leffers inside the residence.


Officers made entry into the residence and located Jonathan in the bedroom, deceased from a single gunshot wound.


Detectives with the Decatur Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit as well as Crime Scene Technicians, and Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson arrived on scene and began an investigation into Jeffery’s death.


During the course of the investigation Vanessa asserted a claim of self-defense.

The investigation is on-going and no charges will be filed at this time. However, at the conclusion of the investigation the case will be presented to the Morgan County Grand Jury for consideration, as are all cases in which the manner of death is homicide.”
