THE SHOALS – It’s all contingent on them actually expanding the call center, but Walgreens might get $350 Thousand. That is what Susie Heird at The Shoals Industrial Development Committee told The Quad-Cities Daily today.

Walgreens, which operates a 200-person-plus call center in Muscle Shoals, was promised today that if they decide to actually expand their workforce  there, S.I.D.A. will give them $1,000 per new hire. It is a carrot-or-stick proposal. No new hires, no money. Walgreens is considering the Shoals expansion, but it is also considering operating out of Florida.

The relationship between Shoals Economic Development authority and Shoals Industrial Development Committee can be cloudy to the uninitiated. The State of Alabama gave SIDC authority to set a half-cent sales tax for this area. The money is administered by S.E.D.A., according to Heird.

A decision to locate in The Shoals is pending a comprehensive review by Walgreens. It is expected that an announcement will come within the next several months.
