THE SHOALS – Eleven delegates from the Shoals area, including staff and board members from the Shoals Chamber of Commerce, visited Washington D.C. and met with several key legislators to discuss local matters.
The Shoals delegates met with Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions; Congressmen Robert Aderholt, Mo Brooks, Bradley Byrne, and Brett Guthrie; and former Congressman Bud Cramer.
“One item at the top of our agenda was the continued funding of the Highway Trust Fund,” explains Shoals Chamber of Commerce President Steve Holt. “It’s imperative we maintain a level of funding for highway development. Highway 43 North and Highway 133 South are gateways to our area, and their completion would mean a big economic boost to the Shoals.”
The Shoals delegates also discussed the importance of amending the Dodd-Frank Act, as well as the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank, the official export credit agency of the United States that ensures U.S. companies have access to financing for export sales.
Shoals delegates had appointments at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Essential Air Services, the organization responsible for funding air services in the Shoals.
“This was the largest group of delegates we’ve had for our annual Washington D.C. trip,” said Holt. “I think we made a good impression, and we’ll continue to fight for legislation that’s conducive to growth in the Shoals, both at the State and Federal level.”
The Shoals Chamber of Commerce is also slated to send a delegation group to Montgomery in April for its annual visit the Alabama State Capitol.
