The family of Shirley Mae “Chuck” Reed, age 92, of Decatur, who passed away quietly at home on Saturday, May 4, 2019, surrounded by her family, will receive friends on Monday, May 6, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home, Decatur. Interment will follow a private family ceremony at Burningtree Memorial Gardens.
Born March 18, 1927, in Boone, IA, she earned a degree from Iowa State University and went to work for the FBI in the mid 1940’s. She later returned to Iowa and met and fell in love with Earl Charles Reed, a local business man. They moved to Omaha, NE in 1953, married, and started a family there. In 1980, they moved to Decatur, AL where she and Earl began a small business with their two sons. She worked there until her passing.
A strong, loving woman, she earned the nickname “Chuck” (after Chuck Norris) for her unstoppable spirit and drive. Throughout her life, she never let anything slow her down, and she continually amazed both her friends and family alike to the end. Generous to a fault, she lived her life always giving to her family more than could be expected or asked. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by all of her children, Jeri Lawrence (Steve) of Marion, OH, Doug Reed (Vicki) of Omaha, NE, Steve Reed Mary of Decatur, AL, and Jody Keith (Brian) of Decatur, AL. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Jill, Danny, Michael, Jon, Ashley, Cris, Jenni, Andy, Megan, and Katie, along with 14 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, who provided all of us with immense comfort and support until the end.
