Sheryl Berta McGrath – Obituary

sherylSheryl Berta McGrath went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 16, 2014. She was born August 3, 1935 in Catskill, New York to the late John McGrath and Mable Egnor McGrath Hack. After graduating from Catskill High School, she graduated with honors from Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie, New York. She then received a BS and two MS degrees from Columbia University School of Education. As an Associate Professor of Nursing, Sheryl taught for many years at Hunter College and Staten Island University. As a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, she was very active in the women’s volunteer work. She worked with the prison ministry with young women incarcerated at Riker’s Island, and with grade school children, teaching them basic health and hygiene skills. At the same time, Miss McGrath became a licensed bartender from the State of New York, just for the fun of it.

After moving to Madison, in 2003, she became a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Madison, where she was a member of Daughters of the King and Episcopal Church Women. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, and a past president of the Madison Women’s Club. She made numerous mission trips to Appalachia, Kenya, and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Survivors include her sister, Coral Lindenfelser and husband, Peter of Guilford, CT, and nephews, Seth and Niles Lindenfelser; and sister, Margo Williams and husband, George of Madison, nephew Stephen Williams and niece, Jennifer Ebbert; and many other relatives.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 3, at St. Matthew’s, followed by a memorial mass at 2:00. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. A private interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to The Ark, Bo Cole Road, Huntsville, St. Matthew’s Church, 786 Hughes Road, Madison, or a charity of your choice.
