Oscar (Tommy) Thomas McCaghren, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and retired logger, passed away on September 18, 2024, at the age of 80.
Known for his exceptional work ethic and meticulous nature, Tommy made a lasting impact in his community.
Born on July 10, 1944, in Decatur, AL, Tommy was the son of Emmett and Frances Justice McCaghren. A graduate of West Morgan High School, served in the Army in Germany following graduation. He then built a career in iron work, welding, and later established his own logging business.
Tommy treasured his family, including his devoted wife of 57 years, Helen Oden McCaghren, and his three daughters, Tammy Stover (Nick Stover), Tina Nelson (Tim Nelson), and Tracie Turrentine (Josh Turrentine). His pride extended to his six grandchildren, Dillon Childers, McKayla Stover, Landon Nelson, Laney Nelson, Jayden Turrentine, and Joslyn Turrentine, as well as his two great-grandchildren, Emmie-Lou Childers and Anna Mae Childers.
Tommy was passionate about drag racing, enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sports activities, and loved sharing stories about his family.
Tommy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of humor, generosity, and tough love will continue to inspire and guide us.
Preceding him in death were is parents, a brother: Jerry McCaghren and a sister: Pearl White.
A memorial service will be held at Peck Funeral Home on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 11 A.M. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. on Friday at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center in Tommy’s honor.
