Memorial Service for Mr. Sherwood Ashley Stewart will be on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 2:00 pm at St. James Episcopal Church in Alexander City, Alabama.
Mr. Stewart passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at his residence. He was born on September 21, 1925, in Montgomery, Alabama to Percy Myron Stewart and Alma Mills Stewart. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church.
Sherwood was a World War II veteran, serving in Intelligence as a cryptographer in the Army Air Corps and later in the Air Force Reserve. He also served as Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After graduating from Huntingdon College, he received a Master of Music degree from the University of Georgia. He was offered music scholarships in Paris, recording contracts, and parts in Broadway musicals, but preferred life in Alabama. After teaching public school music for several years, his lifelong career was in insurance.
Sherwood enjoyed fishing, bowhunting, singing in church and for public events, and acting in local musicals. He loved all people and enjoyed many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 77 years , Anne Tisdale Stewart; daughter, Nancy Stewart (Phil) Peterson; son, Ashley Tisdale (Paulette) Stewart; grandchildren Ashley (Puneet) Stewart, Sean (Nicole) Stewart, Grant Adams, Andrew (Joy) Adams, Angel Adams (Tobias) Moon; great-grandchildren, Meena Anne Stewart, Carter Adams, Eli Adams, Addison Whitt, Brayden Whitt and nephews, Thomas (Lee) Wells, Jaye (Stovie) Wells, Dale Wells, Ken (Lynn) Stewart and James (Carla) Stewart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maxwell Stewart, Laslie Stewart and Percy “Junior” Stewart.
