MONROEVILLE – Harper Lee won the Pulitzer for her 1960 novel… “To Kill A Mockingbird” was the seminal treatise of Southern exposition. A thesis on truthfulness, community standing, guilt, the coming of age.
And just this week, thanks to the Alabama Securities Commission, the final story of the Finches might actually be told. The State conducted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the impending Summer release of the sequel to “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Rumors flew around the state that Ms. Lee, now 88-years old and residing in an assisted-living facility, was somehow coerced or manipulated into releasing the novel that she swore would never see the light of day.
While the Securities Commission has given its blessing that, as far as they were concerned, Ms. Lee underwent no type of illegal coercion to release the novel, the Department of Human Resources is weighing in on the case. According to an unnamed Alabama State official, the Human Resources inquiry will be settled within ample time for the July release date.
