Sarah Creagh Webb McCollum – Obituary

Sarah Creagh Webb McCollum, 100, passed away on May 31, 2015 after a brief illness. She was born in Demopolis on March 23, 1915 and had lived in Greensboro for the past 73 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Luther Gwaltney McCollum Sr.; her parents, Anna Garber Webb and John Cox Webb Jr.; six sisters and brothers, Marie Louise Webb, Adelaide Webb Braswell, Anna (Nancy) Webb St. Amant, John Cox Webb III, Buckner Garber Webb and James Browder Webb.
She is survived by her children, Creagh McCollum Richardson (Billy), Luther Gwaltney McCollum Jr. (Libbo), Nan (Nancy) Garber McCollum; four grandchildren, Sally Richardson Goings (Alfred), Emilie Richardson Shields (Gordon), Margaret McCollum DeBardeleben (Whitney), Elizabeth McCollum Goodwyn (Caleb); five great- grandchildren, Sarah Creagh Goings, Caroline Henderson Goings, Lola Catherine Shields, William Richardson Shields and John Gwaltney Goodwyn. After graduating from Demopolis High School, she attended Nazareth College, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, in Bartstown, Kentucky, transferring to and graduating from the University of Alabama. At the University, Sarah formed many lifelong friendships and was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. After graduating from the University, she worked in New York, returned home, married and started a family in Greensboro. Sarah was a very devout Catholic and lived her strong faith, attending Mass weekly at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Greensboro. In 2005, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI as a pledge of divine favor bestowed the Apostolic Blessing upon Sarah for her service to Our Lady of Lourdes Church. She was very active in her community, loved raising her children, and was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother.
Her family sincerely thanks her caregivers, Brenda Hambright, Mary Aaron, Lelia Howard and Cora Hambright.
Pallbearers are Dwight Braswell, Johnny Braswell, John St Amant, Buck Webb, John Cox Webb IV and Frank Bruce.
A family Mass was said at our Lady of Lourdes Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday June 2nd, 2015 with burial following in the Greensboro Cemetery.
