Sandra Belle McElwee, 81, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on September 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on New Year’s Day in 1945 in Gadsden, Alabama, to Bernice Veatrice Davis and Houston Edgar Davis. Sandra grew up in Gadsden and graduated from Etowah High School. It was in her hometown in 1965 that she met the love of her life, Charles David McElwee. The two were united in marriage on February 25, 1966, embarking on a devoted, 60-year journey together rooted in deep love and mutual support.
A beautician by trade, Sandra brought warmth, care, and brightness to everyone who sat in her chair. Her true calling, however, was her faith and her family. A devout Christian, Sandra lived out her beliefs daily through her endless kindness, generosity, and lively spirit. To know Sandra was to feel truly valued. She had a rare gift for making everyone around her feel deeply loved and embraced as part of her own family. She was an active and dedicated member of both Friendship Baptist Church and Church of the Highlands, where she found immense joy and fulfillment in worship and fellowship over the years. Sandra was also renowned in the kitchen; her home was a haven of comfort and joy where all were welcomed, always filled with warm hospitality and the delicious aroma of her home-cooked meals and baked goods.
Sandra was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Veatrice Davis; her father, Houston Edgar Davis; her brother, Robert Edgar “Bob” Davis; her sister, Barbara Gail Grady; her twin sister, Linda Carol Davis-Smith; and her dear son, Mark David McElwee.
She leaves behind an enduring legacy of devotion, faith, and unconditional love. She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles David McElwee; her beloved daughter, Leigh Ann McElwee Bridges, and son-in-law, Stuart Daniel Bridges; her cherished granddaughters, Abigail Leigh Bridges (Hudson Howell Morris), Annabelle Lindsey Bridges, and Kristin Bridges Howard; her darling great-grandchildren, Caroline Eleanor Howard and William “Will” Thomas Howard III; her sister-in-law, Sandra Davis Hamilton; and her nephews, Keith Davis, Kevin Davis and Steven Smith. She also leaves behind a host of extended family members, dear friends, and church family who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
Sandra lived a life marked by love, faithfulness, and devotion. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory lives on in the countless lives she uplifted with her compassion and grace.
May she rest in eternal peace.
Visitation will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, at Fairview Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama. The service will follow at 11:30 a.m., followed by a family graveside service.
